Championship: Drury 9th August

11:00 AM / Sat 5 Jul

Last game of the championship and we needed a win to guarantee keeping maratei away from the top of the table.
The falcons started well and dominated possession however it did feel like one of those games where it was going to be hard to get a goal. There were a few chances but there goalkeeper was jn good form.
At half time the score remained 0-0...
Early in the seconds half we had a corner and the the ball was placed in the goal area... lots of girls and some frantic attempts by boths sides.. unfortunately cor drury the ball was struck by one of their own and ended in the net... shame but gave use a 1-0 lead taking the pressure off a little.
Molly managed another to provide a more comfortable 2-0 leed which we held until the final whistle..
Anna was awarded player of the day for great commitment thrught the game and creating lots of chances for herself and her team mates... it was akso her birthday! Well done anna.

Championship: Onehunga Mangere 2nd August

Top of the table clash, winning thisgame would put us on top with one game to go.. it was going to be a tough ask given Onehunga had won all but one game and won them with lots of goals.

We traveled on Mangere for the game which also didn't work in our favour, but the girls were for for the challenge.

From kick off Sophie dribbled the ball straight through their defense and scored! Yeah! What a start, perhaps the fastest goal Ever!

Things tightened up after that initial shock and it was a close end-to-end game..Onehunga scored late in the first half and then again early in the second half with a wonderful lob from distance which found Ellie off her line with no chance of saving it.

Molly had a number of near misses in the 2nd half, one hitting the post.. she kept putting their defense under pressure and eventually it paid off with a goal... 2-2.. a draw would be enough for us to go on top... but it wasn't enough for the girls. Sarah did drop back to help in defense, but we were obviously still keen to secure the win... with only a few minutes to go Sophie score another.

Final whistle 3-2... great game and great Win!

Ellie was awarded player of the day for not only this game but a great season in goals.

Championship: Western Springs 20th july

It was nice to play of artificial surface,  with recent heavy rain the other pitches are not in great condition.

Tail end of school holidays also meant we were without Ellie,  Sophie & Clara. No subs... which did provide me the opportunity to referee.. which was a good run around. ..

Western springs,  based on results so far did appear to be a weaker side and I was quietly confident of another good win.

The start of the game did suggest the same. We spent the first 20min in their half with most of the possessions. But as has been a problem in other games.. just could not score a goal.

Finally lucy did sneak one past their goalie.. however shortly after they had a break away run.. one-on-one with molly in goals for the first time.. and they scored.

Molly did make a few good saves in the first half, but we were unable to regain the lead, despite many chances.

Lucy returned to goalkeeper for 2nd half and molly to the mid field.

The flow of the game remained the same in the 2nd half, we dominated possession with lots of changes, but did not convert. Aanchal managed a goal to once again take the lead, but they once again responded with a goal of their own.

With only seconds of the game remaining, they had another break away run, and just pushed the ball past the post... 2-2 final result..

Tara was awarded player of the day for good distribution of the ball from defence.

Championship: Merto 21st June

12:00 PM / Sat 21 Jun

The Falcons are on fire since the start of the chanpionship. Metro had no answer in the first half. We seemed to be able to score at will. Molly secured a hat trick and lucy and sophie both got one each.

There were lots of lovely movement from the midfield,  running the lines and passing. The defence also held strong returning the ball quickly into attack.

The 2nd half was a bit different. Molly managed 1 more goal, but it did seem like a different metro team.

A final score of 6-0 was a great result to grow confidence in scoring goals..

Player of the day was an easy choice. Molly of course.

Championship: Beachlands Maraetai 14th June

11:00 AM / Sat 14 Jun

A rematch of an earlier grading game, but this time we had home advantage, and for the first time this season a return to out regular venue from last year, the mighty Pollard Park. It was another beautiful winters day, and other than the goal keepers squinting from the sun, everyone enjoyed the blue skies and it I'm sure contributed towards a great game.

The introduction of 'The Retreating Line' for the remainder of the season caused some confusion following a briefing before the game, but the girls soon forgot all about it and played a normal game (apart from 1 offside call - Anna you need to start thinking about that line...). It's still too early to start thinking about the new format, but at least there was no significant impact to the game.

Perhaps it was World Cup fever, the girls played perhaps their best game yet. Steady, clean passing, moving into space and some moments of individual skill. In the early stages there were a number of wayward attempts at goal, but all positive attacking which would hopefully lead to some goals...

When Sophie finally did find the net, it was the start of a shooting frenzy leading in the end to a well deserved Hat Trick. The defense and Ellie also had some work to do, managing to keep Beachlands goalless.

A solid team performance across the positions. Player of the day went to Sophie, of course... not every week someone gets a Hat Trick.. increasing the goal tally to be ahead of everyone else combined... memories of last season spring to mind with another Sophie dominating the goal tally... come on the rest... need to start finding the net and challenging for the top goal spot.

Eastern Suburbs 31st May

vs

11:00 AM / Sat 31 May

We went into this last game of the grading round sitting well mid table feeling quietly confident against Eastern Suburbs who had only managed 1 win during the grading games. However, clearly Eastern Suburbs turned up wanting to reverse their fortunes so far, perhaps home advantage helped, along with the a smaller pitch than we were used to, but whatever the excuse, it was not going to be an easy win.

Easter Suburbs got took the lead in the first half, and although the Falcons played well, it lacked a bit of intensity and there weren't enough chances on goal.. which was a worry.

A quick chat at half time about chasing the ball, keeping pressure on the attack and taking our chances with quicker shots on goal.

2nd half was better, and there were some good chances... then finally, Sarah who had played a strong game in mid field, took a shot at goal from distance, top corner, no chance the keeper was going to get that one.

Despite a good team effort the score remained 1-1 till the dying seconds of full time and beyond. The referee was apparently waiting for play to stop before blowing the whistle (a common problem in this rugby nation - confusion over the rules)... unfortunately for us the play stopped with them scoring a goal... final score 1-2 loss.

Sarah was awarded player of the day for good mid field work as well as a great goal.

Pukekohe 17th May

vs

11:00 AM / Sat 17 May

That game is what is after referred to as a coach killer. I was quietly confident of a strong performance against the bottom of the table team, who were yet to win a game, and who would blame me....

We started strong (as usual) and spent the first 10 minutes in their half, but still struggling to score a goal. Then suddenly a break away run and a goal... to them.... closely followed by another.... 15 minutes in we were 2-0 down, despite spending most of the time in their half.

Was getting worried, it was going to be a bit of a mission to come back and win... then just before half time, Lucy found some pace and shot with her left foot... and scored! Yeah there might be some hope yet.

Half time team talk was all positive and girls were obviously keen to go out there in the 2nd half and turn the game around.. spreading the defense and passing into space were key messages, which they clearly took on board.

We were 2 players down, so I know it would need a huge effort from the girls to play at full pace all the way to the end, and they surely did. What a great 2nd half. 2 excellent team effort goals, with the balls passed through the midfield and beyond the defense creating clear striking opportunities for both Sophie and Anna... kept them goalless in the 2nd half to win a tough but well deserved 3-2 victory. Great TEAM effort.

Player of the day went to Clara, who had a strong game on the wing, moving into space for passes and helping her team mates by finding good positions for passes.

Fencibles United 10th May

vs
Three kings G1 falconer

11:00 AM / Sat 10 May
Strong start from the Falcons but an early goal against the run of play put Fensibles Into the lead.. the ball found the next again with a deflection from a corner.

It was a steady down hill slope from there with fensibles finding the net a total of 6 times through strong attacking play.

We did play well and were competative throughout but continue to struggle with accurate shots at goal.

Sophie did manage one goal.

final score 1 - 7

Molly was a popular choice for player of the day.

Papatoetoe United 3rd May

11:00 AM / Sat 3 May

What a beautiful morning for football, blues skies and not a breath of wind.

The girls arrived for warm up and were keen to get going and they did, straight into action with some excellent passing, slinky skills and attaching play.

In some cases there were some significant size differences, most notably Anna against the Papatoetoe defenders, but that didn't stop Anna, who challenged hard for the ball at every opportunity.

We made good use of the wings, running the lines keeping the ball in their half through great ball control and passing, creating a number of chances around the goal area.

Unfortunately, from a corner Papatoetoe placed a well struck ball into the goal area, it bounced about a bit, then somehow sneaked past Ellie for a goal.

That didn't seem to affect the general play, with the Falcons continuing to attach and apply pressure to their solid defense.. which unfortunately continues to hold.

Again, against the run of play, 2 break away runs and solid strikes found the net, leaving us a bit shocked by 3-0 behind at half time.

The 2nd half was no different, the Falcons continued to play well as a team, passing the ball and controlling the game, spending most of the half attacking Papatoetoes' goal area. Despite almost everyone in the team having a shots at goal, they were either just off target or saved/deflected.

The Papatoetoe defense proved just too tight. Final result 3-0 loss. :(

Great game though, and great team work.

Lucy was presented player of the day for great skills on the ball, control and passing on the wing.

A great effort, regardless of the score..

Beachlands Maraetai AFC

11:00 AM / Sat 12 Apr

Game 2 of the season and already the new look Falcons are combining as a team. From the kick off, there was some great passing, moving and all round team work.

Tara and Sarah started well in defense creating a solid wall preventing any attacks, allowing us to keep the pressure on, which soon paid off with Sophie scoring her first game of the season, following a couple of failed attempts.

Molly followed with a well struck shot creating a good lead at the end of the first half.

Aanchal brought lots of treats for half time so the team was well stocked with sugar to see them through the second half.

The team slowed a little in the 2nd half and Maraetai started out strong and created some challenges for Ellie, so they managed to find the net. This was closely followed by a 2nd goal by Sophie creating a good buffer to see us through to the final whistle. 3-1 great result on the road.

Sophie was awarded player of the day for 2 excellent goals.

Western Springs Manchester City

11:00 AM / Sat 5 Apr
Game 1 got off to a slow start, but soon the girls got into gear and started to dominate, spending a lot of time putting pressure on Western Springs. We were rewarded when Lucy sneaked a wee cheeky first touch ball past their goalie.

We held this lead into half time.

Western Springs started the second half well putting a lot of pressure on our defense, but Aanchal and Tara held strong allowing the midfield to mount a number of attacks. Danielle nearly managed a goal with her left foot and there were a few other close misses.

Unfortunately, repeating of habit of last year, we lost a late goal, allowing them too much time with ball around the goal area. With only a few more minutes to play it was a big ask to regain the lead.

Sarah did try with a punt from distance, it had the power, just not the direction.. worth a try through.. would have been outstanding had it found the net.

1-1 final score. great game to watch and great start considering a number of new changes to the team from last season.

Aanchal was awarded player of the day for a huge work rate in defense.
